A Strong Community: What’s Important
It takes a village to raise a child … as the African proverb goes … and a strong, empowered village is one where more kids do better
Another African proverb reminds us that … “that if you want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go far, go together.” We want to go far and make a big long term change for our kids – so we’re in the going together game.
Us humans are social creatures so connection with others like us is a really important part of wellbeing. There’s a practical dimension to that – we need support networks when times are tough – but there’s a much deeper, wider nourishing thing that goes on when we feel connected to others and that we belong in our place.
But beyond social connections, an empowered community is one that delivers better outcomes for its kids. Where local people have a strong voice and can take their own action on the issues that affect them, everything gets better. The community’s resources are better utilized, people are more optimistic and feel change is possible and community solutions are more effective because they are designed together with people who know the issues inside out.
These are the issues we are focused on in A Strong Community:
- Social connection
- An empowered community
